So, earlier this month I asked for opp-inions on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! He's a redneck-y fix-it-yourselfer who has exclusively owned Ford and GM cars (and Japanese motorcycles) as long as I can remember.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Following some good suggestions from N2Skylark among others, he was looking at 3800 powered Buicks and the like. Until today.

"What does [CrzRsn] say about Saab 9-3 convertibles?"

AM I TAKING CRAZY PILLS

Who is this guy? Why did he ask for my boyfriend's opinion first? Where did that idea even come from? Just last night he was saying he needed an affordable beater to commute down to Brooklyn and now this? I know they were owned by GM, but still....

Kinja'd!!!

"But it's a cheap 4cyl turbo!"

Ok dad, have fun! Ultimately, not my car, not my problem, but still totally out of character for the old man :)

I daily an 03 9-3 linear sedan. Mechanically it has been excellent. Almost 120k and it has only needed an alternator a door module and brakes tires and struts which I don't count since they are wear items. Mine is a low pressure turbo automatic. 180hp is not fast and the auto is pretty sloppy. Handling is responsive and fun while still being comfortable for a daily. Watch out for broken front springs. These were recalled and the new ones are better. Have a dealer run the vin to see if this was fixed. Diagnoses is a popping noise when turning lock to lock or over uneven surfaces. If mine was a 6spd I would love it. As is its a 6/10 commuter. Better than most but still meh.

My dad has an '07 9-3 Aero 2.8t convertible that he bought new:

Surprisingly, he's had no major mechanical issues despite the motor's, shall we say, questionable reliability reputation.

The roof goes down, the ride is comfy, the seats are excellent, it handles decent, and the motor has plenty of punch for a luxo cruiser.

On the downside, the steering is way too light, the paddle shifters aren't active in auto mode (unlike some cars including my 135is DCT that let you use the paddles any time, you have to first put the shifter in M before using the paddles), and the interior quality is ok but not as good as it should be for the sticker price.

I still like it though. And it has a roomy back seat.

Sent him CrzRsn's advice ("I thought he was over GM? They're overglorified Chevy Malibus with a tendency to break often and be very expensive to repair. Even more expensive now that Saab parts are getting harder to find... tell him to at least get the coupe because those soft tops are awful")

and he replied "But cheap 4cyl turbo that gets 30mpg and there are a bunch of lo miles clean ones near me!"

When you ask the dude with the Swedish car obsession for advice and even he tries to warn you... there's no help for you! He hasn't bought any yet though, and being in southern NY he has to check they're not Sandy flood cars too. Get your popcorns, it's gonna get interesting!

Haha, I shall.

I briefly looked at used Saabs and lusted over the prices, then I tried looking around for parts. They were hard to find anywhere, There's a Saab repair shop near me and everything. But I'm not exactly sure, but the expensive things usually come first and foremost.
